Highly successful Melbourne motorcycle workshop space, Kustom Kommune, is eyeing off Brisbane as its next location.
The Kustom Kommune promises an inclusive community workshop where motorcycle lovers from all walks of life come together to build bikes, swap stories and learn new skills, bonding over their shared love of machines.
Founder of the original Melbourne space, Jimmy Goode, said Brisbane was the logical choice to expand the business due to its thriving bike scene and huge customer demand.
“We know Brisbane has been growing exponentially over the past few years, and the local scene is crying out for a creative, communal space where like-minded people can come together and build something amazing,” he said.
“Over the past few years we’ve seen many people making the pilgrimage from Brisbane down to our Melbourne workshop, and I constantly receive emails and messages from people asking when we’re expanding – we’re finally ready, and now is the right time.”
The Kommune promises more than just workshop space for DIY mechanical work. With space for social and riding groups, startups, retail and hospitality, the shop will offer a diversified business catering to the wider creative community in Brisbane.
For the custom bike enthusiasts, the Kommune offers all the tools, equipment and networks needed to work on their project. Service, maintain, customise, restore, learn or just hang out – the Kommune operates with annual memberships and a super relaxed feel. There are no bookings or hourly rates, once you’re a member you simply rock up and wrench.
At its core, the Kommune is an inclusive community which welcomes all bike styles, sub-cultures and social groups, encouraging members to build their own shared reality. The opportunity to upskill is a key feature of the space, with loads of opportunities to learn specialist skills with one-on-one or group training workshops, as well as events like women’s wrench nights.
“What we’ve seen emerge in Melbourne over the last few years is an encouraging and supportive community. From learners to seasoned racers, custom to sports style, the Kommune is about the mutual love of bikes and the culture that comes with them,” Jimmy said.
Kustom Kommune originally founded via Crowdfunding, raising just shy of $35,000AUD to launch the concept back in 2013 and then raised a further $120,000AUD via reward based platform, Pozible, in 2016 to facilitate growth and move into a larger venue.
Kommune is working towards a third raise via equity crowdfunding to open additional spaces around Australia and build a national network of DIYers. Equity-based crowdfunding will offer members (and the greater community) a chance to grab a membership and shares in the business, creating true member-owned and member-run spaces around the country.
The Kommune is about the mutual love of bikes and the culture that comes with them.
